What are the differences between the Comic Sections?

The story, or "main" section, has an ongoing story to it, and new comics for it appear on the front page for all of EGS. Currently updates on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The Sketchbook section is full of one-shot gags, sketches, and/or comics put up in place of a Story or NP comic when the regular schedule has to be changed for some reason, or if I have a comic I want to post that doesn't fit anywhere else. Currently updates on Wednesdays and special occassions.

EGS:NP is a subsection with short stories that generally don't have continuity unless referred to in a later story, and aren't a part of the main storyline unless referred to in the story section. Is currently on hiatus.

When do the comics update?

All sections update at 12 pm US Eastern Time if there is a new comic. If a comic is running late for whatever reason, I will announce it on Twitter.

How do I contact the author?

I have an idea for an EGS story. Should I send it to you?

While I appreciate the attempted contribution, I have more than enough stories and I prefer to use my own ideas. I ESPECIALLY do not wish to be sent new character ideas.

What about fan fiction?

While flattering, I am obligated to never read or endorse them for my own protection.

What about fan art?

Fan art is generally awesome and encouraged. There's a line it can cross where fan art becomes fan fiction, but that generally doesn't happen. I have favorited a lot of fan art over at my deviant art account.

Are the characters based off of people you know?

Nope! Well, some secondary or background characters might be. Like if someone does something that annoys me and I vent in a comic, I suppose the strawman representing them would count as being based on them. That, and some people have had cameos. Generally speaking, however, the characters aren't based on anyone I know.

If there were an EGS video game, what would it be like?

I imagine a mix between Tetris and Grand Theft Auto.

Why is this comic named "El Goonish Shive"?

I couldn't think of a name that summed up the comic, so I went with nonsense followed by my last name. The "Goonish" part of the name is actually a result of an episode of The Simpsons with the line "Hired Goons". As a result of that line, I wound up signing some papers "Dan 'the Goon' Shive" in high school, which lead to my using it as part of the current title.

How far are stories planned in advance?

Generally speaking, the main points for stories are planned well in advance. I have enough story ideas to last for several years. The reason for comic delays and the like is that while I have the major plot points down, I don't have some massive script or layout guide for the day-to-day comics. If you will, I have several fine forests planned, but I need to sort out the trees.

I have a website. Will you link to me? Should I ask you to?

If I link to someone, it's because I've decided to do so on my own for some reason. Or, you know, they've bought ad space ^_^

Will you critique my comic?

Maybe. I've actually gotten pretty good at critiquing while attending graphic design classes, but properly critiquing a comic can be a big commitment an can awkward if there are harsh truths to bust out. I don't want to rule out the possibility entirely, but generally speaking, I'd prefer not to.

I could code part of your site for you. Should I do so?

No. There was one time when I got sent a bunch of code without asking for it and truly, greatly appreciated it, but I'm beyond that stage now. I have training in website maintenance, and there are very qualified people at 910CMX to help me if and when I run into trouble.

How do I pronounce "Shive"?

Sh-I-ve. The "e" is silent, and the "I" is long. So basically, it's pronounced exactly as it's spelled following proper rules of English pronunciation, and rhymes with "hive".

How do I pronounce "Kaoli"?

Kah-oh-lee. The origin of this word is Japanese, though the original spelling is "Kaori", meaning "fragrance". The "r" was made into an "l" due to Japanese pronunciation.

How do I pronounce "Nanase"?

Nah-nah-say. The origin of this name is Japanese.

How do I pronounce "Nioi"?

Nee-oh-ee. The origin of this word is Japanese. The translation for "Nioi" is intended as "Scent" for this comic, though the spoken word can stand for other similar meanings in Japanese (one possible translation is "smell").
