No, that last panel is NOT gratuitous.
That is SHOWING the magic they can do instead of just TELLING everyone they have magic.
It's WRITING!
I wanted Catalina to note that the tail might help with balance, but I ran out of room to include it without putting the text over Catalina herself, which I didn't want to do.
