Past Me: "Time to see what future me has made of my outline for finally completing Balance, and... WHAT THE HECK?!"
Present Me: "Whuh-oh."
Past Me: "The HECK is all THIS?!"
Present Me: "Look, Past Me, I had an idea."
Past Me: "AN idea?!"
Present Me: "Okay, several."
As that dramatization of my mind brain fighting with itself implied, the things happening now were a pretty late idea. In particular, I was exactly where Tedd was two pages ago, suddenly realizing "oh hey. This is a thing I can make happen, and it would make sense."
As important as it is to have a plan with stories, sometimes ideas jump at you late.
And that's why being in charge of ANY story can be a bit like herding cats, regardless of whether you're the only one writing it. Sometimes, the very mechanics of your world can be a herd of cats.
