One might think Mr. Verres is being all contemplative by the end of this page, but no.
He just desperately wants to clarify that Elliot is not his son, and that it's sort of up in the air and confusing what exactly Grace is to him.
Given that confusion with Grace, however, he is uncertain how to articulate this clarification. Plus, he lacks a presentation board with which to draw out a family tree.
Is this commentary to be taken seriously? Probably not, but it would be pretty in-character for him.
