Much to my delight, people did get that I named Kaphoglio's Mimic after Kaja and Phil Foglio of Girl Genius (link is to its first comic). They've drawn some cards in their day as well. I wanted to give the mimic some manner of mysterious creator with a cool-sounding name, so I went with an amalgamation of their names.

A big dragon

As for Ohkie Rue Ne over here, the name is essentially a compromise for readability of what I wanted to name it:

Ookii ryuu ne.

Which is NOT pronounced how it looks in English, because it's Japanese. It IS pronounced relatively close to what's in the comic.

It basically means "big dragon, huh?"

I needed to call it SOMETHING out of the ordinary (for English, anyway), and that amused me.

But how good a big dragon, huh?

Were Ohkie a real card in a coincidentally similar card game, well... It actually wouldn't be that amazing.

Like, don't get me wrong. A 10/10 that flies and does damage to everything on your opponent's side while attacking is nothing to sneeze at, and there are ways around that high cost.

It's just there's this little thing called "power creep", and, well...

One could do better.

FOR THIS COMIC, however, I wanted something really big and simple. I basically gave it that secondary ability just to slightly appease the card game fans who would be aware of everything I just said.
